Our program involves faculty from the National Animal Disease Center and departments of Animal Science; Biochemistry, Biophysics, & Molecular Biology; Entomology; Kinesiology; Veterinary Microbiology & Preventive Medicine; Veterinary Pathology; and Veterinary Diagnostic & Production Animal Medicine. The diversity of faculty expertise ensures a broad education, while offering flexibility in choice of specialization. Currently, faculty and students are pursuing research in antibody and cell-mediated immunity, gene expression, immunochemistry, immunogenetics, immunomodulation, immunophysiology, leukocyte signal transduction, mucosal immunity, and nutritional immunology. Our graduates have a broad understanding of the interdisciplinary field of immunobiology, and can effectively integrate the principles of immunology with related disciplines. They are able to effectively communicate with scientific colleagues and the general public in both formal and informal settings. Graduates are able to integrate theory and research to address complex problems facing scientific professionals studying animal and human health, taking into account related ethical, social, legal, and environmental issues. They are skilled at carrying out research, communicating research results, and writing persuasive grant proposals. All students admitted into the PhD program receive a competitive annual stipend and 100% tuition scholarship their first year. All admitted graduate students receive free single coverage health and dental insurance. City transportation on the "CyRide" bus transit system is free to students with service all over the city of Ames. Ames was ranked as one of the Top 100 Livable Cities by Money Magazine. Ames offers affordable cost of living and a safe living environment.     Accreditation Information: Iowa State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, a commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.  # Of Credits Required:   Time To Degree:     Previous Degrees Applicants should have an undergraduate or advanced degree in one of the basic or applied sciences, such as biochemistry, biology, human medicine, immunology, physiology, pharmacology, psychology, veterinary medicine, or zoology.  Pre-Requisite Courses Appropriate undergraduate coursework includes mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biological science.  International Student Requirements International students are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) prior to applying.
