The Drama Therapy Program is one of only two approved graduate training programs in the United States. Students receive a background in psychology and follow a curriculum that meets the academic requirements both for Registry as a Drama Therapist (RDT0 and licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
Building on the understanding that the release of creativity can facilitate healing, the use of drama in a therapeutic environment offers people the chance, in a safe and non-threatening setting, to try out new roles and actions, and to glimpse their own possibilities. The program emphasizes the need for acknowledging and integrating the multidimensionality---emotional, spiritual, mental, creative, and social--of the individual, and of the community.
Drama therapy is used with individuals (children, adolescents, adults, seniors), groups, and families, and in diverse settings, including mental health facilities, hospitals, schools, community centers, prisons, senior centers, industry, and private practice. It is effective with severely disturbed and disabled populations, and is also applicable to the exploration of personal growth and human potential in all people.
