The M.S. and Ph.D. degrees are research oriented, requiring an original thesis. The focus of the program is on development of the student's ability to conduct independent, creative, scientific research. Graduate students are expected to assume a major responsibility for their own progress and to develop habits of inquiry that will ensure continuing intellectual development throughout their careers.
