History covers the full range of human experience: the arts and sciences, politics and the spread of political ideas, economic and technological change, and the development of communities and cultures. Our dedicated faculty members guide students through the fields and methodologies used by historians. The doctoral program in history fosters rigorous scholarship and prepares graduates for careers in education, research, business, journalism, and other professions where the advanced skills of a historian are essential. Doctoral students may select programs in United States or modern European history. Master’s students may select programs in United States or modern European history. The Master of Arts program in history stresses research, writing, and historical analysis. Our Public History track within the M.A. program teaches students how to make history come alive outside the classroom and guides students to careers in museums, government, business, and nonprofit groups. Because of our location in Washington, students regularly get to learn from and work with some of the top public historians in the country, through guest lectures, field trips, and internships. This program is for students interested in history but not interested in traditional teaching positions, or for those students planning to pursue traditional teaching positions who also wish to broaden their approach to researching and presenting history and gain additional marketable skills.
