PHD: The Department of Economics offers a PhD degree with programs of study in either political economy or traditional economic theory. The PhD program emphasizes international and economic policy perspectives. The program offers diverse theoretical approaches including feminist, neo-classical, and post-Keynesian and provides solid training in empirical methods which prepares graduates for teaching in colleges and universities, research positions in government departments or consulting firms, and policymaking. MASTERS: The Department of Economics offers several distinctive master's programs, a faculty that combines high quality teaching and an interest in economic policy with serious scholarship, and the special rewards of studying economics in Washington, D.C. Master's course work is intended to provide students with thorough preparation for careers with employers needing well-trained economics professionals, including government agencies here and abroad, Congressional committees, think tanks, international, multilateral, and non-governmental organizations, consulting firms, and financial institutions. The department's faculty and the courses they teach address a broad range of interests. The department has an especially rich offering of courses dealing with international economic issues. Most of our faculty have carried out research or taught in other countries and bring that experience to the classroom. The department offers four different tracks within the master's program: General, Development Economics, Financial Economic Policy, and Business Economics. GRADUATE CERTIFICATES: The Department of Economics at American University offers certificate programs for those individuals seeking to supplement their education with a graduate level certificate. A graduate certificate program allows you to pursue your specific career needs with a schedule that complements your work day. Most classes are offered in the evening and on weekends.
